Transfer GPX to a Garmin

There are three ways to get a GPX file onto a Garmin watch, Edge or eTrex. Which is best depends on your device.

Last updated: 2 November 2026

1. Garmin Connect on a computer

  1. Sign in at connect.garmin.com.
  2. Open “Training & Planning” → “Courses”.
  3. Click “Import” and choose the GPX (FIT and TCX also work).
  4. Choose the activity type and save the course.
  5. Use “Send to device”; it transfers on the next sync.

2. Garmin Connect app on your phone

Open the GPX on your phone via “Share” / “Open with” and choose Garmin Connect. The app creates a course you can send to your device.

3. By USB cable

  1. Convert the GPX into a FIT course with GPX to FIT.
  2. Connect the device by USB.
  3. Copy the FIT file into Garmin/NewFiles.
  4. Disconnect – the course is under “Navigation” → “Courses”.

Older eTrex/GPSMAP units read GPX directly from Garmin/GPX.

Troubleshooting

  • Track cut off: older devices load only 500 points – reduce the file.
  • Imported as an activity: remove timestamps with the GPX editor.
