Split a GPX file

Cut a long track into stages or sections – evenly, every few kilometres, at points you click on the map, or automatically at breaks.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

How to split a GPX file

  1. Open the GPX file you want to split.
  2. Choose how to split: into parts (e.g. 3 equal stages), every x km, at points, at breaks or by segments.
  3. With “At points” just click the track on the map. The split points appear as lines in the elevation profile.
  4. Download each part individually or all of them as a ZIP file.

What is it good for?

  • Planning multi-day tours: split a long-distance trail into daily stages and see distance, elevation gain and hiking time for each.
  • Devices with point limits: older GPS units only load short tracks – split long routes into several files. Alternatively: reduce GPX.
  • Multi-day recordings: your watch ran for several days? “Breaks” splits automatically at every overnight stop.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded?

No. GPX-Werkstatt processes everything directly in your browser. Your files never leave your device.

What happens to waypoints?

Waypoints are not copied into the parts because they usually belong to the whole tour. They remain in the original file.
