Processing of your GPS files

All tools work entirely in your browser. The files you open are not transmitted to our server or third parties and are not stored.

Local storage in your browser

For convenience, GPX-Werkstatt stores a few things in your browser’s local storage (chosen map layer, colour scheme, last map view, the route in the route planner and – for up to ten minutes – a file handed to another tool). This data stays on your device.

Hosting and server logs

When you visit the site, our hosting provider processes technically necessary data (IP address, date and time, requested page, user agent) in server logs to deliver the website and protect it (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

Maps, elevation, routing and search

To show maps, calculate elevations, plan routes or search for places, your browser loads data directly from the following services. Your IP address and the requested map area (or coordinates / search term) are transmitted to them:

  • basemap.at (map tiles, server mapsneu.wien.gv.at, operated by the City of Vienna for the basemap.at partnership)
  • OpenStreetMap Foundation (map tiles tile.openstreetmap.org, place search Nominatim nominatim.openstreetmap.org)
  • OpenTopoMap (map tiles tile.opentopomap.org)
  • Waymarked Trails (trail, cycling and MTB overlays tile.waymarkedtrails.org)
  • Amazon Web Services (terrain model “Terrain Tiles” s3.amazonaws.com, only when calculating elevations and in the route planner)
  • BRouter (routing brouter.de, only in “Create GPX”; the clicked coordinates are transmitted)

Legal basis: legitimate interest in providing maps and tools (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Some providers are located outside the EU (e.g. Amazon Web Services, USA).
