Import GPX into Google Maps
Google Maps itself cannot open GPX files – the way is through Google My Maps. The map you create there is then visible in the Google Maps app on your phone.

How it works
- On a computer, open Google My Maps and sign in.
- Click “Create a new map”.
- In the left panel, under “Untitled layer”, click “Import” and choose your GPX file.
- The track appears as a line. Give the map a name.
- On your phone, open the Google Maps app → “Saved” → “Maps” to find it.
Good to know
- Google Maps only displays the line – there is no turn-by-turn navigation along your GPX track.
- For very long recordings, reduce the file first.
- Just want to look at it? Use the GPX-Werkstatt viewer – no account needed.
Frequently asked questions
Can I open GPX directly in the Google Maps app?
No. Import works only via Google My Maps in a browser; the map then shows up in the app.
